Treating Red Bumps on Arms

Red bumps on arms are usually a symptom of keratosis pilaris. This skin disease affects around 40% adults worldwide and usually starts during adolescence. The cause of the ailment is the clogging of the skins’ pores due to the body’s overproducing keratin.  This causes inflammation and that’s where you get the redness of the bumps.

It has been discovered that keratosis pilaris isn’t contagious and is usually hereditary. So you don’t have to worry about getting them yourself unless you have a history of the disease in your family. Though there is no treatment and the bumps usually disappear as you age, it will make you feel better if you did something about them. Here are a few tips that can help soothe your skin.

  1. Use a moisturizer. The bumps tend to leave your skin dry and rough. Moisturize by using a soap or lotion. Avoid hard soaps that will only leave your skin dry.
  2. Eat well. Since there’s nothing that can by applied to your skin and get rid of the bumps, its up to your body to clear them. You can aid it by eating a lot of fruits rich in Vitamin E which is good for your skin.
  3. Be gentle with your skin. Never think that if you scrub hard enough the bumps will disappear. Doing so will only irritate your skin more and cause the redness to become worse.
  4. Use Exfoliating creams. These usually have a high content of lactic or glycolic acids which can help with the outer part of your skin.
  5. See a doctor.

For the many people who suffer from red bumps on arms, there is really no short cut but to wait for the bumps to go away. Still, you’ll feel much better if you follow the mentioned suggestions on alleviating the redness.
