Dietary Remedies for Acne

Acne is a common skin disease affecting tens of millions of Americans, both adults and teenagers. It is mostly harmless medically speaking, but it can seriously hurt your self-esteem and even cause severe depression, so it makes sense to treat it as fast as possible.

Acne is often caused by hormones. High levels of certain hormones will make your body secrete too much oil called sebum, which then blocks the skin pores and creates acne. The good news are that you can easily control these hormonal levels yourself. To put it simply, acne has to do with a hormone called insulin. Insulin is the hormone your body produces when your blood sugar gets elevated fast, which happens when you eat any types of sugar: sucrose, fructose, lactose or carbohydrates: bread, potatoes, rice, pasta… Some people can tolerate sugar and carbs very well and their skin stays clean and pretty, but many of us are not that lucky. Consuming too much sugar will immediately show on our face or our back, wherever you tend to get spots.

You can become acne free in a relatively short time by making some changes to your diet. This is really the easiest and healthiest acne remedy there is. All you have to do is to reduce the amount of carbohydrates on your diet. The best way to get started with the carbohydrate conscious lifestyle is to read a book or two about the topic and start following the low carb diet plan introduced there. If you want to get started right away, one good shortcut is to avoid all the whites:  white flour, white pasta, sugar and milk. Since we live in a world full of carbohydrates, the change might feel strange in the beginning, but you will get used to it and most likely start loving your new lifestyle. Give it a try! You do not have to live with acne forever!
